Matt Schrader is an Emmy Award-winning consumer-investigative journalist at CBS Sacramento with a passion for exposing wrongdoing.

Matt has uncovered public officials abusing perks and millions of dollars in taxes collected by mistake, and has saved consumers hundreds of thousands of dollars after resolving their consumer problems.

Matt won an Emmy in 2012 for Outstanding Specialty Assignment Report, and an RTNDA News Award for Specialty Report. He has also won several L.A. Press Club Awards for his student broadcast news program in college.

Matt’s 2014 investigation into a fire district’s wrongful taxation of more than $3M resulted in a state assembly bill to authorize repayment of all funds collected in error. His investigation into the dark side of the locksmith industry led to increased pressure on fraudsters surprising desperate homeowners with high-priced final bills.

In 2013, Matt’s undercover investigations caught cell phone retailers lying about extended warranties, recycling centers cheating customers out of money owed and companies using (and overusing) illegal robocalling systems to ramp up business. He also tracked down an evasive upholstery company that wouldn’t return customers’ furniture, and wired up an undercover house to catch A/C repair companies stretching the truth to get business.

In 2012, Matt spearheaded an investigation of drug residues in dairy products and a hidden-camera investigation of pricing strategies at Kohl’s department stores.

Prior to CBS Sacramento, Matt researched and helped develop major investigations for reporter Joel Grover at KNBC Los Angeles. His work exposed the Mayor of Los Angeles breaking his own water-conservation guidelines and caught farmers market vendors lying to re-sell imported produce as homegrown.
